Kaylie's Email Monday July 26, 2010‏

Monday July 26th, 2010

Familia!!!

Oh my goodness you are the best family in the whole world. Thank you! Thank you! for your wonderful emails!! They totally made my whole day Thank you. Your words are exactly what I needed to hear. Your words strengthened me so much!! It is so wonderful to know that you are thinking and praying for me. I can truly feel your love and prayers each day!

Sorry for last weeks Email. It was just a tough week. The first week was just funny that I didn’t know Spanish then the second week, I think all I could do was cry, because I didn’t know anything! But this week has been good. Still not understanding but instead of hearing one big long word it is TWO now! LOL!!!!!
No, it really is going great and I am working hard because I know that is the only way I can truly lose myself. I want to so bad to lose myself, to became less selfish. I want to in every way possible be like Christ. He is so perfect and so loving. I am such an unprofitable servant. I feel bad that last week was so dark because Christ mortal ministry was never easy for Him and how can I think that my mission will be any different. I know it will and is hard but like you said mom and dad I can do this. Laren you are such a great brother!!! Thank you for your email it seriously helped me so much!!! I love you and congrats on graduating that is awesome!!! But I can do this it will take a lot of work and like Laren said I need to lose my pride and just talk no matter what and the people just stare at me, that is why I have a Latin companion because she can just re tell everything I just said! Right? But truly this week has been really good hard but a good hard!
We have been working on getting this couples papers so that they can get married and baptized but it has be a tough run. This morning we rode on a 2 hour bus ride to get Carlos’s papers but still no! But there is hope. We just have to get another document for him them we can get his papers. then their marriage and baptism!!!! Hopefully next month!! I know that this work is so true because it is so so so tough and if it was easy it wouldn’t be true and you have to work hard to gain salvation and I am learning that.

But the miracles I see in these peoples life is awesome. When they don’t have money for food they still pay their tithing and pay the bus fair to come to church is incredible to me. It takes so much faith and courage. I see the hand of the Lord in all things truly. Satan works hard but you know what I am going to work harder.!!!
As for the boy that gave up smoking with out a second glance still hasn’t smoked!!!!! How cool is that and he came to church this Sunday and guess what he paid his tithing and guess what he is going to be baptized on Saturday!!!! He is incredible. His heart is so soft and he told us the other night when we were there teaching him that my companion and I are angels in his life! I was so touched. I know like you said mom and dad the spirit is the one that teaches and even though I don't know this language perfectly I can still effect people.

Like yesterday we went to a members home for dinner and to get to their house you have to take an hour bus ride but anyways elders are in our area and they came too, one is a gringo and goes home in 3 weeks. But anyways he was talking to me on the bus and he told me that the Sunday I got up and bore my testimony he had an investigator there and he said that while I was up there she said that is the most beautiful thing. I can’t believe all the tender mercies that I have in my life he said that I have such an amazing spirit and that even though I can’t speak perfectly I am still teaching. I thought that was a great tender mercy in my life this week.
I love this gospel and I love my mission. Yes it is soooooooo hard but it is soooo good and the Lord knows our needs. Like we are out of money pretty much for this month but he works through people and the most random people give us food and a member in our branch gave us money for this trip. It is so true! that scripture in Matthew where the lord is talking to his disciples and he is telling them you don’t have to worry about anything when you are serving me and it is so true! tender mercies!!

As for some questions. Yes I do eat and I love the food it is a lot of rice and beans and platanos it is kind of like a great big banana but I love it!! We have a little cook and she is a member and she also does our laundry so that is nice. They eat a lot of bread here not tortillas but bread Como pan Dulche. It is good, there is nothing that I have tried that I haven’t liked oh....wait there is a drink the same drink that we had in Florida visiting Casey’s mission it is so gross but I do drink it bc people here don’t have anything and you can’t waste.

But the branch is great my companion said that this rama is the best she has had in her mission. They are so great to fellowshipping our investigators.

KISSKAL!!!! Oh my word! My sister is going to have another baby next week! oh my word oh my word!! I am so excited for you and Seth!!! You can do this Crystal and I want you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I know that your little one just cant wait to come down and be part of your eternal family!! Your the best mom ever Kiss I want to be half as good of a mom as you one day!! I love you! You will be in my prayers send me pictures of the little one! I have a feeling it is a girl but I don't know we will soon find out!!!

I love you all so much, thanks again for your emails they seriously strengthen me!! I love this gospel it is so perfect and it does change lives! Even mine and I know that the Atonement is real. I know that it is not just for my sins but also for the darkest lowest times in my life. The Atonement is what helps me get up everyday!! I love my Savior and I know that he did truly die for me and for my investigators. I love him more than I can possibly say!!! Thanks for being such amazing examples to me!!

Love always and forever Hermana Turnbaugh

Pura Vida! everyone here says this after you say Hola and Como Esta they reply Pura Vida!! I love it!!

Kaylie's 2nd Email from San Carlos Costa Rica!‏

Familia!!!!

Hola ¿Como esta? How is my most wonderful familia doing?? I miss you all so so so much!!!! Thank you for your emails. I love them they made me cry! Thanks FOR YOUR words of wisdom and encouragement. I really needed them this week. This week has been just so hard!! So frustrating and it just has been so hard not knowing the language or not knowing what is going on at all. I just feel so so alone and I bet Casey and Laren can agree that the first couple of weeks you truly feel so alone. I walk through the streets feeling like I am totally alone. And just wishing that I could just call my MAAAM and dad just to hear their voice and know that everything will work out and that I will learn this language.

But anyways just pray for me. I need you support and prayers. The language is coming but still so hard. I don't understand anything at all it seems like but I know that God knows me and I can and will learn this language. I just need to have faith and patience in my loving Heavenly Father.

But something cool! So you know the couple who we are trying to get their papers so that they can get married well it has been the toughest time getting their papers and we still haven’t received them yet. But the other night the husband has a problem with smoking and it has been really hard for him to quit and so we went to their house one night and shared with them I think about genealogy work and talked about the Temple with them. And I had an impression I needed to share a scripture but I couldn’t remember where is was and plus I only had my spanish scriptures. But it just came to me and I shared Joshua 1:9 with them and I told them in spanish that this week is going to be hard and Satan will want you to smoke Carlos but be strong and have courage because the Lord loves you and he knows your trails. I have no idea if I made sense but I said it anyways. But the cool thing was my companion calls them every night to make sure that everything is ok and she said that after we left, that they were fighting and he wanted a cigarette but she said that my scripture came to mind and they stopped fighting and he didn’t smoke. Isn’t that cool!!! The Lord worked through me, it wasn’t me or my mind, who remembered that scripture but is was the Spirit. I thought that was such a cool experience bc it made me have faith in my Savior that I can be his instrument though.

I really do love it here, even though this is seriously the hardest emotionally physically and spiritually thing I have done so far. It is so hard putting the natural man off and the negative thoughts that Satan puts in my head. I have come to learn that this church is so so so true bc Satan is really doing everything in his power to stop our work but the amazing thing is that Christ is incredible and he is perfect and when we, well I, just can’t go on anymore he takes me in his arms and I can walk another block, open my mouth to one more person. I know this is only the beginning of my hard trails on my mission but already I have seen miracles in my mission and I have only been here what 2 weeks. I do love it!!

So a cool story we found with this boy Juan Antonio who works with a recent convert but we asked him if he wanted to learn more and he said yes he did. So last night we went to his house which is the shed where he works bc he doesn’t have a house. and we taught him by candle light the first lesson and the Prophet Joseph Smith and also the word of wisdom bc he has trouble with smoking. But my companion asked him to be baptized on the 31st and he said he would .The Spirit in that shed was so strong and something else which is incredible is we asked him to stop smoking so he got up but and then gave us his cigarette pack which was almost empty and a pack that was brand new!! And his lighter. I was in awe! That he had enough courage to just give it up. It is so true that God is softening the peoples hearts we just need to sift through the rest of the people to find them. Last night I saw a miracle!! Please pray for him that he will continue to be strong. I know without out a shadow of a doubt that this church is true! It is Gods work. I am merely a tool.

I know I need more faith in Him and I am trying hard to see the good in everything.!!
It is hot here, my hair is horrible bc it is just straight but its ok. My make-up is great!! Clothes are great as well!! Our animal problem is great no more animals bc our landlord came and covered our ceiling with more wood so no more critters just only huge spiders but I am just learning to deal with them. It is so humid here that my clothes are just wet all the time. But I am truly happy really I am I know that I am suppose to be here. Even though I cant see why yet but I know the language will come.

Why I didn’t write yesterday is that we had a hermanas day at presidents house where it was only hermanas and we made food and just played around it was fun but once again I didn’t know what was going on and even though I was surrounded by girls I was so lonely. Yesterday was hard for me but today is a good day, your emails helped. We had to walk through San Jose and San Jose is so scary. I never in Jerusalem felt scared but yesterday walking to the bus station was so scary!! The people are loco here and the Bums are gross if you know what I mean. I had to watch my step. Anyways but we did make it back safely.

Thanks again my family!!! I love you all please pray for me!!! please ask our loving Heavenly Father to help me learn this language!

Love always and forever Hermana Turnbaugh

Kaylie's 1st Email from Costa Rica! So hard! but so funny!

Kaylie’s 1st Letter email from Costa Rica ~ Monday July 12, 2010

Hola Familia!!!

I am here in my first area it is called San Carlos!! It is nice, it is I believe 3 hours north of San José! It is nice here but very poor. But I like it! People just look at me it is funny it makes me laugh sometimes but I feel like such an outcast because I am so different but oh well.
Ok so I will start from the beginning and tell you everything. So My flight was awesome the Elder I was with is not my favorite cup of tea but it was still good. The flight from Dallas to Costa Rica was so long it felt like. When we got off the plane we had to go through customs and then we walked outside and there was my Mission President and his wife. They are so cute I love them. I gave my mission presidents wife a huge hug. So from Monday till Wednesday we were doing paper work and getting our visas squared away. I stayed at the mission presidents home. I was with 5 Elders for a couple of days because no Hermanas came to this mission. So once again I was solo and it was hard because the 4 other missionaries were from Honduras, Nicaragua or Panama and I had no clue what they were talking about!!! I am not going to lie I was really lonely. But at night I would help my Presidents wife learn English she is so cute. It helped being with her to dull the pain a little bit. But like you said in you emails, I couldn’t really believe I am in Costa Rica.

So on Wednesday we had a cambio meeting where the trainers came and got us. and My Companion is a POWER HOUSE I LOVE HER!!!! She is from Honduras her name is Hermana Vega. She only has 6 weeks left and I am her last trainee. So I was sitting in the meeting and she comes in with a flower and gives me a kiss on the cheek and gave me a flower so cute huh? but..... she doesn’t know a lot of English which at times is so frustrating. But she is so great!! And patient with my Spanish .Everyone that I have meet says she is awesome. She helps me out so much and at night I say prayers in Spanish then I make her say prayers in English so she can learn English. So I love her and she is so cute Heavenly Father has really blessed me.
So that night we had a 3 hour bus ride to San Carlos and then we went to work we dropped my bags off and went to visit families that are preparing for baptism. One family is a couple who is not married and that is common, almost every family we see, they are not married. It is frustrating but this couple is so close to being baptized they just need papers saying that their residence is here in Costa Rica bc they are from Nicaragua and before they can be baptized they have to have them. But they live in the most humble circumstances. Their home is just a tin shack and they have dirt floors. I cannot believe the poverty here. Peoples homes are just shacks and wood with tin for the roofs. And they have nothing when we go into the houses they don't have anything. But hopefully next week they will have there papers and they will be baptized. They both want to be so bad and well... before we have to marry them, but they want to do that as well.

My mission is fun but tiring and at the end of the day I just flop onto my bed and I just fall asleep.

As for the language it is so hard!!!!! It sounds like they are just saying one big word. I sit in the lesson and probably look like a deer in the head lights. I have no clue what was going on. Like yesterday after church we went and knocked doors and a family, well older couple, let us in. And my companion and a ward member was teaching them and I thought I was understanding but after I asked my companion so what? Do they want us back bc I thought they were really interested and she no they didn’t want anything to do with us lol! I just have to laugh to stop from crying bc this is so so so hard not to understand anything. I just wish I could know this language. Seriously they taught me something else but not Spanish because the language they speak sounds like Chinese and not Spanish. Sometimes I think why did Heavenly Father send me here, with the language so hard, but I am trying to be positive. Especially yesterday at Church, holy cow my head hurt trying to understand everyone!! But I did bare my Testimony bc It was fast Sunday here. So that is pretty cool. I know I will learn it. I just wish sooner than later bc I feel so bad that I can’t help out my companion more. So keep me in your prayers or maybe fast for me to have strength. But it is getting better. I do really love it. Costa Rica is so beautiful!! The area is pretty! A lot of rolling hills and close by is a huge volcano which is pretty.

So you know how I said in Israel they have 80% of all the cats well Costa Rica has 80% of all the dogs here. They just walk around everywhere. But I do feel like a Missionary! It is weird how people look at me most of the time they dont know what to think I guess bc I am tall! American! then I am a Missionary and I noticed people are a little afraid of us. They dont like to talk to us but I think we are the same, if someone came to our door we wouldn’t really want to talk to them or we would avoid them on the street, you know. It is so funny though the members or people we meet will talk about me in front of my face to my companion and I can understand a little so they will ask my companion, well where, pointing to me where is she from or what is her name. LOL!! I think it is so funny then when I answer they look at my companion and say oh!! LOL!! It will get easier.

So my apartment is nice but it is a shack I will send pictures soon. But I have a funny story. So in my bed I found poop like mouse poop and I told my companion one night and she came into our room to look and she came in and screamed and me and her both ran out of our room. and I said ¿Que Pasa? and she in Spanish said there an animal on our ceiling rafters. And I looked in the rafters and I saw two eyes! so we both ran out of our apartment and got our land lord and he came in got a huge knife and started whacking at this creature and he killed it. I don't know what it was but that is how they get things done here. They just bring out a huge knife and kill things. LOL It was so funny! Then yesterday we get home from tracking and my companion tells me to come in our room and on her bed was a rat creature and we ran out of the apartment and got our landlord again but his wife was only home. So she got a broom and crashed it around our apartment and was just whacking at it!! Then she set her huge rottweiler on it on my companion and I were laughing so hard.

I do love this work it is hard and scary!! But I know the lord is watching over me. I know that he does perform miracles everyday in my life. I love the Atonement and my Savior. Bc when I have times that I want to come home I think of him and I know that he has felt my fears pains and loneliness. I love you all! Thanks mom and dad for your emails. They were exactly what I needed to hear!!! I love you and I am so blessed to have the family that I have.!! Yes my P day are Monday!! Oh and on Wednesday our zone gets to go to the Temple so I am excited for that. I love you all!!! Thanks for loving me and praying for me!!

Love you always and forever Hermana Turnbaugh or Hermana Toonba in other words

No regrets!!!!!

Countdown To Costa Rica

Tuesday June 29th 2010 Kaylie’s Last P Day in the MTC!

Mi Familia!!!!

How is my most wonderful family!?! Sorry I didn’t write earlier it has been crazy here!!! One of my sisters in my room had appendicitis last night and she had to be rushed to the hospital last night for surgery then I had to go get her from the hospital this morning, so that is why I haven’t written.. But she is fine and doing great! She is back at the MTC just resting and taking it easy!! So I went out into the real world today it was crazy!!! LOL no it was fun! people sure looked at me and looked at my tag! I loved it though I felt so powerful!!

Yes this week was awesome with the Presidency here.. I got to see Holland ~ Bednar ~Oaks ~Neilson ~Hales lets see who else well...... so many.. I will try to remember and write then all in my letter.. But my Elders, guess what, passed the sacrament to the Prophet!! Actually to him!!!! So cool huh!?! They are amazing Elders!! I am going to be so sad when we leave each other!
So it is my last week. It is so crazy how the time has flown by! I am feeling the same feelings as you mom! excited, nervous, anxious and all of the above but mostly excited!! It is so crazy that less than a week I will be in Costa Rica, my home for the next 16 months and thinking about it makes me want to dance! I love the Costa Rican’s so much already. Oh and guess what my teacher Hermano Rivers just got back from being down there for a week. He went there on vacation with his family. So he said that it is beautiful and that I am going to love it and the people will just die when they see me!! LOL!!

So this week is our teaching week and we are suppose to teach as much as possible in Spanish I am feeling pretty good about Spanish.. I wish I knew more of course but I know enough to get me by until I learn more down there right?

Oh OK so my flight plans are: I fly American Airlines out of Salt Lake and I arrive in Dallas ft. Worth then I have a little delay and I get back on the plane and I arrive in COSTA RICA that same day!! But of course I will call you every chance I get so be home or take your cell phone everywhere that day k?

But Mom thank you for your Dear Elder and Email this week your words inspire and lift me up! You are truly inspired bc what you said is what I needed to hear this week! I know I can do it! I know it will be hard but Christ said it would never be easy he only said it would be worth it! I have done a personal inventory this weekend and I want to change. I want to be the best Missionary I can! I want to be the most obedient positive missionary ever!! I don't want to have any regrets but I want to work so hard that it hurts! So at the End of my Mission as I take off my tag I will take it off with the knowledge that I gave my whole Heart Might Mind and Soul over to the Lord. That I was a true disciple of Him~ that I didn’t waste his time at all!. I want to make my family proud and I want to make my future husband and kids proud and all the people I came into contact with proud that they knew me!! I love this gospel and I know that God Lives and that Jesus is the Christ.. He is perfect and he is everything.. It is because of him that we Are and it is through Him that we can become like our Father in Heaven! I love this gospel and I am so thankful for everything in my life that has lead me up to this moment! The people I have met and the choices I have made..

This week my elders and I taught our progressive investigator who is just a teacher who works here but we wanted to commit him to baptism and the elders said how about this Saturday well when we taught him it was Thursday and that meant only 3 days and he would be baptized.. I said to my elders no way that is to soon and then I was like OK well we will see how the lesson goes then we can decide.. Well the lesson was powerful we taught him about Christ His atonement and baptism and as I was teaching I had an impression! I needed to commit him to baptism and I did and guess what he said yes!! I know this was not a real investigator but the Spirit was so strong.. He wrote my teachers an email after our lesson and told him that the lesson and the spirit was so strong. Sorry I am almost out of time so I will finish the story in my letter!! But I love you all! Thanks for your prayers in my behalf!! Mom thanks so much for sending me a camera. I will send mine back and no I don't need anything, oh maybe garment tops .

I love you ALL!

Love Kaylie

Hi MY Familia!!!

How is everyone doing!?! Thanks for All your letters and emails! They make me so happy to hear from all of you!! Mom and Dad is everything ok this week!? I didn’t get an email from you and I am a little worried!!!! Are you ok!?! Let me know if you are ok and you are safe!!!!!! I hope all is well!!
This week was a pretty good week, kind of hard, but that is how life goes! I just think that I am getting anxious about leaving in 2 weeks and just wishing I knew more! But I know that I am not suppose to know everything right away but still it does get me down. But I am trying to stay positive and stay diligent in all aspects. So please pray for me this week and next week that I wont be so hard on myself and I will work hard and endure to the end!!!

So 4 new sisters moved into our zone and they are so cute! 1 of them will be serving in Chile and the 4th girl is going to Chicago Spanish speaking. It is good not to be completely alone. And they are so positive and that is so great!! They truly are so glad to be here!

We have been teaching a lot in spanish and last week on Saturday we taught the first lesson again in spanish and it went great!! My teacher Hermana Mella watches us as we teach and she write notes for us so that we can improve! And this week for all the companionships, she said she wanted to talk to each one of us individually as a companionship. So she took me and my elders and talked to us about our performance.. She said that she had none that she had to write down, that we are great teachers! She said that “how you taught and applied it to the needs of the investigator was incredible!”. It was so awesome!!!! It made me feel so good that we are teaching the way the Lord wants us to teach.. I know that he helps me so much while I am teaching because sometimes I can’t even believe some of the words that come into my head, it is awesome! Even though I get down and some days are hard, I do know God is with me and He loves me and most importantly I am his daughter and He wants me to succeed! And I find great comfort and courage knowing that he wont let me fail if I put complete faith in him!!

So this week all the new mission presidents are here. They actually come tomorrow for a week which is awesome and which mean the 1st Presidency will be here as well. Whoop! Whoop!! Hopefully I will get to see them.. On Friday we have a huge fireside and they say that usually the First Presidency speaks that night!.. And guess what? My Elders were asked to pass the sacrament to the First Presidency this Sunday! isn’t that awesome!! I feel like their mom! I am so proud of my Elders!! We are like powerhouses and we wont be stopped!!!! LOL!

I am loving the MTC and it makes me sad that I will leave just because I have learned so much here!! It is a bitter sweet feeling for sure leaving but I can’t even wait to meet the people of Costa Rica!!!! I look at my mission presidents picture in the hall way and I just love him already and his cute little wife!!.. I thank Heavenly Father that I have this opportunity with him to bring all his children back to him again!!

I know that this work and this gospel is true! I love it more than I can possibly say!! THE CHURCH IS TRUE!!!!!! The church that Christ established is here on the earth once again!! I love this gospel and I love Joseph Smith, I have grew to come and love this man! I know he did see God the Father and Jesus Christ in the grove.. That by a simple act of just praying he changed the world forever.. I love him for his faith and courage!!

I love my family!! Thank you for all your love and support!! Thanks Mom for sending me those pictures it kind of made me cry because I love my family so much and I have such a cute eternal family!! Never forget that we are all in this together! That we are an eternal family and we are here to see each other through!!
I love you!!!!! Las Familias son Eternal!!!

Love always and forever Hermana Turnbaugh!!
